Enjoying the Little Things: Turning Day-to-Day Moments into Self-Care and Mindfulness Practices

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, free of judgment and open to engaging in our current sensory experience with our environment. When we combine mindfulness with a self-care practice, we are better able to manage life stressors. Often, we think of things on a grand scale, although integrating mindfulness and self-care can take place in brief daily moments. I would like to share three of my favorite self-care items this month that serve as mindful moments when I engage with them:

The first is an essential oil spray that I created with the help of Artemesia Soaps, Salts, and Scrubs owner at a recent women's event. My soothing "signature scent" was achieved by combining patchouli with one of Artemesia's shop blends. I find that the simple practice of spritzing this soothing scent every morning, as stress arises, or simply as a refresh, creates an opportunity to pause, and to breathe in relaxation.

Find a scent that you are drawn to, taking a moment to observe your internal reaction to inhaling the aroma. Notice what brings you a sense of calm, what grounds you. You can easily incorporate the scent into your day-to-day life, without taking away from the things that demand greater attention.

The second self-care practice that I would like to share includes my favorite fabric: linen. For me, linen contributes to a fresh, clean, soothing space. Achieving a sense of tranquility in my space helps me achieve a like state of mind. That is why a favorite self-care practice is enjoying the calming contribution of my favorite fabric to home spaces. Whether it be resting or working, simply being present and absorbing the calming energy of a space can contribute to our overall wellness.

A favorite shop with all-things-linen that are top notch quality is Lenok LINEN in Europe, while a local shop out of Boulder, Colorado, Lava Linens, creates a focused set of linen products for the outdoor lover in bold colors and simple design. Maybe you don't love linen as much as your local psychologist, but you can practice mindfulness and self-care through slowing down to enjoy the simple sensory experience of your favorite fabric!

The third self-care practice that I would like to share includes a health supplement purchased locally, but versions of this tonic can be found nationwide. Togetherness’ original Fire Cider is an all natural tonic with a kick. I like to sip a teaspoonful in the morning for an extra immune system and energy boost, though it can also be used creatively in drinks and cooking. Taking the time to sip a spoonful of Fire Cider each morning creates a sense of routine and the feeling of giving back to the body, as well as a mindful pause of enjoyment and reflection before starting the day.

You should always research health supplements and consult with your medical doctor prior to incorporating them into your diet, although you may find that integrating a wellness practice into your routine contributes to a sense of stability and consistency. Additionally, one healthy habit often leads to another. You can start small with one positive health practice and build on that practice once it is a consistent part of your routine, working your way to a more well-rounded, healthy lifestyle.

Self-care looks different for everyone, although an important piece for each person to remember is that a self-care practice does not have to be big, bold, or grand. If we are mindful, self-care can take place in brief moments throughout the day. Those moments come together to improve our overall ability to manage stress and improve our mental, emotional, and physical wellness, which are all connected.

Consider expanding perspectives of self-care to include the small things that bring joy. Next time you engage with that aspect of your life, redirect your focus to that moment to fully absorb the experience. Notice how your mind and body respond. Pause to allow yourself full appreciation of the moment. Give yourself opportunities to enjoy those moments often, encouraging self-care and mindfulness to become integrated into your daily life.
